Abstract: In this paper, we try to make a reflection on  linguistic norm grammarians and linguists vision, fundamental distinction for the development of studies that aim the teaching of Portuguese in Brazil today and intend to draw attention to the linguistic diversity and the need to avoid  social prejudice. The heterogeneity and polarization of linguistic behavior that characterize Brazilian linguistic reality, according Lucchesi (2002), have an intimate relationship with the social and historical context in which the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil was formed and also relates to the ideological motivations that underlie maintaining an ideal linguistic standard that seeks to superimpose the real diversity.

Keywords: Linguistic norm; popular portuguese; social prejudice; language teaching.
