The constant presence of wry humor as a strategy of social criticism within the social dialogues has been studied by sciences such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, among others. Through pragmatic notions of speech, Linguistics explains the functioning of language in the construction of the ironic speech act. In this context, the objective of this research is to reflect on the discursive mechanisms of ironic speech acts which function in establishing social criticism. For this analysis, the corpus is comprised of comics texts which, by their character of multimodality, enables readings on many levels and dimensions. The theoretical background of our study is centered on a literature review of ironic language ((DUCROT,1987; BERRENDONER, 1988; CHARAUDEAU, 1983 and BRAIT, 1996), as well as on the revisiting of the notions of speech acts (AUSTIN,) Thus, aware of the fact that comics are social and historical productions and usually manifest values, concepts, feelings of social cores, we intend – with these theoretical and methodological mechanisms – to understand more properly the messages of this multimodal universe.
