Abstract: In multisemiotic texts, some referents can be triggered by an image, by a referential expression, by non referential forms or certain clues in the image suggesting the construction of a given referent. Nothing ensures that the reader of a verb-imagetic text, for example, will identify the object of discourse first by the verbal, nor the visual aspect. Every individual processes referents differently, according to what seems more salient at the time of the interaction, for several reasons. In this paper, we assume that the recognition of referents, in referential introduction and anaphora processes, collaborates to build the contexts of sociodiscursive practices. Our goal is to demonstrate, in cartoons posted on Facebook and WhatsApp, that imagetic traits (of content or form) express  referents, introducing them explicitly by the image, or just by evoking them. As for the anaphora, it occurs  when an explicit participant in the image corresponds to an already introduced referent. For that reason,  they are considered as (coreferential or not) anaphora: when performed by the image itself or when the referent is evoked by certain traits of the image (some of them explained by the Grammar of Visual Design, by Kress and van Leeuwen) favoring an inferential construction. In that case, they are considered as indirect anaphora. The referent resulting of those movements always undergoes changes. It can be confirmed by other imagetic or verbal aspects, because (direct or indirect) anaphoras are not anchored in only one preceding object. But it can also be refuted and transformed into another referent inside another isotopic chain, in a process  Custodio Filho (2011) called correction.

Keywords: Imagetic traits; referents; anaphoras.
